Keane has been sidelined for over two months with the injury already, but now faces an operation to correct the problem.

Manager Craig Brown told the Lancashire Evening Telegraph: "It will be nearly the end of the season before he's ready to return. It's a massive blow for the club and the boy himself.

"The doctors said the only solution now is to screw the bone together. When it has healed properly they will then take the screw out. So it's two operations.

"It is going to take a long time before he is playing again and back to how he was before, what started out looking like four weeks on the sidelines is looking like turning into four months."
