Large Following Leave Disappointed

In hindsight this might be a match where Grayson looks back and regrets changing his usual 3-5-2 away formation to that of 4-4-2. He did so because the home side played only one striker but the change in formation did not seem to benefit Preston.

Kilkenny who has recently signed terms for Preston partnered Welsh in midfield but it was the wide areas which caused some concern. The left footed Holmes played on the right wing whilst Gallagher played on the left. Both cut in from their wings leaving their respectove full backs exposed especially down the Preston left which wouldn't have happened with the wing back formation.

In any event the game was evenly contested in the first half. Wolves had the chance to go ahead when clean through but Rudd managed to save. The warning signs were evident early on.

Preston came back into the game and had a goal disallowed when Hume converted a cross. He was ruled to be offside. Moments later Garner had a curling shot which hit the bar.

The home side always looked dangerous and once again cut through Preston with Edwards chipping Rudd when clean through to score to give Wolves the lead.

Griffiths was lucky to be on the field as he was ona  yellow card then in the build up to the goal was adjudged to have dived whena  penalty wasn't awarded. In the goal celebrations he then kicked out at the hoardings and was given a final warning ny the referee.

Preston had a penalty shout of their own when it appeared that Gallagher was pushed in the box. The referee slowly started to lose his grip ont he game and several fouls went unpunished throughout the match.

Wolves could have doubled their lead before the break when Jack King for some reason tried to play the Wolves frontline offside. They were clear onside but Rudd made another save.

The game was killed off in the second half when Bailey Wright who is usually reassured passed the ball short to Welsh. The ball was intercepted and Wolves had the simple taks of putting the ball in the net.

Preston made changes with Wiseman coming on to make his debut after his switch from Barbsley. Preston reverted to 3-5-2 but by then it was too late. North End had lots of the ball but it was all sideways movement and Wolves saw out the victory.

It was only Preston's fourth defeat of the season and the second on their travels. Preston remain in fourth place and this match showed a realistic reflection of where the club are at and what they require if they are to move upwards from their present position.
