Late Doyle Winner Seals Victory

Grayson decided to make adjustments from the league defeat at Reading shifting to a back four more out of necessity than choice. Grimshaw played at right back which was a temporary reprieve after being hauled off at half time on Saturday.

Beckford was unsurprisingly rested and Pringle was used out wide with Gallagher on the opposite wing. Preston dominated possession as they ought to against a lower league side but as is usually the case they showed how blunt they are going forward.

Chances were created and with both Pringle and Gallagher operating out wide the team does look stronger going forward. Perhaps a big man such as Makienok may have been the more appropriate frontman for this sort of game.

Garner had a goal ruled out for offside which was touch and go. There were a number of other chances which Preston failed to capitilise on. The visitors threatened on the odd occasion having a goal rule out for offised which again was a close call.

Robinson and Hmphrey cam off the bench to add much needed pace as Hartlepool tired. Robinson hit a glorious chance spectacularly over the bar on the stroke of 90 minutes.

Preston did manage to score just before the final whistle as Humprhey crossed for Doyle. The strike made hard work of controlling the ball but slotted home from close range.

The Whites are slowly finding second gear and Grayson still switches from formation to formation. It is unclear what will be the favoured personnel and tactics for the remainder of the season but Preston need to sharpen up.
