Preston were linked with the former international back in January but waited until the Summer until his contract was up. Nicholson has failed to sign a new deal at Aberdeen but has been asked to report to pre-season training should he fail to have secured a club by Monday.
His agent, coincidentally related to David Moyes is back this weekend and expected to speak to Nicholson over his future.
