Preston change dtheir line up after the poor second half showing at Brentford at the weekend. Welsh returned in midfield to aprtner Browne whilst Johnson was pushed out to the left wing.

Grayson maintained the 4-4-2 with Woods starting at full back and Wright was paired with Clarke at the back. Due to a suspenion to Graner and Doyle being cup tied, May started up front alongside Keane.

The first half was fairly uneventful and bournemouth were not really troubled. The visitors had th emajority of the play passing the ball around without being effective save for one moment.

Pickford was forced into a save but the ball rebounded to Macdonald who looped a headre over the stranded keeper to give Bournemouth the lead. After thisit appeared the visitors were content simply to hold of the home side.

The second half was a different affair with Preston pushing forward. Keane was played in by Johnson but his left foot shot was dragged wide.

Changes wree made and it was Hughill who made the difference late on. He was a handful for the tiring defence and managed to level the scores with around five minutes remaining.

The game went into extra time when Bournem, outh restored their lead. Preston allowed a defender to run unchallenged from just outside his own box to the edge of Preston's area. This resulted in a shot from Pugh which was defelcted beyond Pickford.

Preston did not give up home and a ball in the box was handled by a Bournemouth defender. The referee had been poor all night giving most decisions to the visitors including a hilarious dive from a Bournemouth attacker which the referee adjudged wa sa foul by teh Preston defender.

Amazingly a penalty was given and Daniel Jihnson slotted home. Unfortunately, Johnson missed the vital kick in the shoot out along with Browne and Hughill. Keane and Reid converted Preston's penalties but with Pickford only saving one, Bournemouth won 3-2.
