The first twenty minutes were pretty lifeless until the match sprung into life after a pretty inocuous challenge brought the visitors a free kick some thirty five yards out. Sammy Clingon blasted the ball at full throttle past Lonergan and in off the bar to give coventry the lead.

The visitors sensed nerves in the Preston back line nad had a couple of opprotunities to extend their lead but were denied by Lonergan. The home side tried to come back in it before the break but couldn't find the killer touch.

Preston came out of the blocks the quickest in the second half. They struck early thanks to captain Sedgewick who found Bron comletely unmarked int he box. The frontman slotted home and the home side took the ascendency.

Moments later Preston were in the lead. Coventry had a corner which was cleared. Mellor found Carter who in turn played in Jones down the right. Mellor caught up with the play just in time as Jones crossed for Mellor to convert all in the space of thirty seconds.

Coventry then smashed against the bar before Brown grabbed his second as the keeper fumbled a corner into the path of Brown who converted. Morrison grabbed a stoppage time consolation goal for Coventry.
