Butt is out of contract and at 35 years of age his playing career is coming to an end. Ian Holloway at Blackpool is trying to tempt Butt to stay on for at least one more season in the top flight but Butt is also mulling over a coaching position at Deepdale.
Ferguson used to play with Butt back in the nineties at Old Trafford and knows the midfielder well. There is a coaching role available with Russell being Ferguson's assistant and David Unsworth taking charge of the reserves.
