Wellbeck who spent time on loan at Deepdale last season impressed boss Ferguson. The striker's time at Preston was cut short due to a knee injury and Ferguson asked if Wellbeck would come back on a season long loan.
Unfortunately there were other interested parties from the Premier League who also wanted to grab Wellbeck and it appears Sunderland are now favourites to sign the young striker.
