West Brom Make Offical Approach

The name could be substituted for a few before, namely Moyes and Davies but Alan Irvine looks likely to leave Preston if the right deal can be struck with Derek Shaw holding little resistance to West Brom's overtures.

Irvine who has turned the club's fortunes around in 18 months will be allowed to leave Preston if a £1 million compensation package can be agreed which no doubt it will be.

Officially West Brom have to talk directly to the club and any person under contract can be refused permission to speak to another club - either players or management. Funny, how North End rate their manager so highly they see the pound signs of compensation rather than fighting to keep their talented manager.

Preston are beleievd to have granted permission for West Brom to talk to Irvine and the ball is now in his court. He has to things to mull over. Firstly, there is the money - no contest really as North End can't offer half of what West Brom can so the only other thing to keep him at Deepdale is loyalty to see through a job he started off.

Being rather sceptical about the game as a whole I can't see Irvine staying as he is an ambitious man with plans that simply cannot be met by the Deepdale board. We should all think back to when Derek Shaw announced that Irvine had taken a wage cut to come to Preston - some proud announcement that Derek, well done old chap.

Anyway, Irvine may surprise us and stay for one more shot with Preston but the grim reality is that Preston will be looking for a new manager in the next week who will be a good month or so behind his Championship colleagues in the search for new blood and pre-season training regime. Makes you think that next season will just be a write off from the start.
