Old Boys 2008/2009 Season Round-Up Part 1

Last updated : 19 May 2009 By Paul Neat

This post season round-up will go through the pick of the highs and lows from depths of League Two relegation battles right the way up to the business end of the Premier League.

Adam Nowland | Notts County

Firstly though, former Wimbledon midfielder Adam Nowland has had his season  at Meadow Lane blighted by injuries  once again which has seen his first team appearances limited somewhat. Unfortunately, Nowland has been released by the Magpies leaving him on the lookout for a club for next season. In the end, Notts County were left comfortably away from the bottom two in 19th but what is in store for Nowland himself remains to be seen.

Games: 16 (5) Goals: 0 Yellow Cards: 2 Red Cards: 0

Marlon Broomes | Blackpool/Crewe Alexandra

Broomes, who left Deepdale in 2005, moved to Preston’s most bitter rivals Blackpool last summer. However, the former Stoke defender has not been able to force his way into the first team plans of both Simon Grayson before he left for Elland Road, and Broomes’ former Blackburn colleague Tony Parkes. Accordingly, Broomes spent a spell on loan with the Railway Men in a bid to ease their defensive worries during a relegation battle, albeit now an unsuccessful one. Crewe finished 22nd in League One, four points behind those with their heads above water.

Paul Gallagher | Plymouth Argyle

The on-loan Blackburn forward has spent the entire season on loan at Home Park after two unsuccessful loan spells last term, namely at Preston and Stoke. Despite gaffer Paul Sturrock recruiting the highly rated Gallagher, The Pilgrims narrowly avoided relegation to League One after finishing 21st on 51 points. Despite the poor league finish, Gallagher has seen his most fruitful spell in front of goal whilst with the Devon club having netted double figures during the 2008/2009 season.

Gavin Ward | Wrexham

Despite early season promise, and the signing of former Blackburn striker Matt Jansen, Wrexham were left languishing in mid-table this season. 10th place was all that the Welsh outfit could muster with Ward playing his part between the sticks.

Games: 34 (0) Goals: 0 Yellow Cards: 1 Red Cards: 0

Colin Murdock | Accrington Stanley

Murdock moved to Stanley after he was deemed surplus to requirements by another former North Ender namely Paul Simpson. Accrington Stanley were left in the bracket of mid-table mediocrity in League Two with the former Manchester United trainee playing less than half of Stanley’s league games.

Games: 20 (4) Goals: 1 Yellow Cards: 4 Red Cards: 0

Kelvin Wilson | Nottingham Forest

Forest’s first season back in the Championship can be considered a successful one after managing to secure their second-tier status for at least another term. Wilson has been instrumental at the City Ground and a key part of Billy Davies’ team, whom he was reunited with following the departure of Colin Calderwood in January.

Games: 37 (2) Goals: 0 Yellow Cards: 2 Red Cards: 1

Jon Macken | Barnsley

Former Deepdale favourite Jon Macken has not enjoyed his most prolific season in front of goal but can take solace in knowing that he and his Barnsley teammates will be playing Championship football for at least another season. The Tykes secured their Championship status on the last day of the season with a 2-1 win over Plymouth at Home Park.

David Lucas | Leeds United

Lucas has spent the vast majority of his Elland Road career playing second fiddle to Casper Ankergren between the sticks. However, this term the former Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper managed to notch up a respectable amount of appearances during Leeds’ playoff push. United were knocked out in the playoffs by Millwall after a 1-0 defeat at the New Den and a 1-1 draw at Elland Road.

Games: 16 (0) Goals: 0 Yellow Cards: 0 Red Cards: 0

Patrick Agyemang | Queens Park Rangers

The Ghanaian striker enjoyed a prolific start to his QPR career when he joined in January 2008 but has not had such a successful season this time around. Going through numerous changes of manager can’t have helped his case but nevertheless, Agyemang finished the season strongly after scoring against his old teammates at Deepdale on the final day. Rangers ended the season in mid-table despite being one of the hot favourites to go up.

Chris Lucketti | Huddersfield Town

Lucketti is in his second spell with the Terriers and was instantly handed the captain’s armband when brought in by Stan Ternant. However, the former Sheffield United and Preston defender has struggled to force his way back in the team and has had his first team appearances limited in a season where Town finished just outside the playoffs.
