Mellor Magic Gives Preston Points

The first half was a gritty affair with the difference between the two sides being waifer thin. A long ball up by Whaley was latched onto by Neil Mellor who was brought down in the area. Davidson blasted home the penalty.

The second half was open and a much more entertaining forty five minutes. The visitors had a couple of close chances which were ruled to be offside. Preston then doubled their advantage when Mellor finished off a good move.

United then came back in the match with ten minutes remaining as they wree gifted a penalty by poor marking. Beattie slotted home to close the gap.

The away side were then reduced to ten men when Mellor induced a foul from the Sheffield defence forcing a second yellow card. The striker then rounded two defenders in the ninety fifth minute to seal the North End victory.
