Simpson promised a more attacking team under his guidance and Preston seemed willing to go forward more using both Pugh and Whalley on the wings.

However chances were squandered in the opening 45 by both sides. Nugent was put through by Whalley only to push his shot past the post whilst Wednesday had the ball in the net just before half time after Nash was lobbed but the goal was ruled out for a clear handball by the Wednesday attacker.

Early in the second half Nugent had a free header but founder only the keeper and Dichio put clean through could not convert.

The game then chnaged when both Hill and Bullen went for a loose ball. Hill got their first and Bullen slid in with studs raised catching Hill. The referee gave a straight red and Wednesday went on the defensive. The game became bitty with Wednesday refusing to kick the ball out when Whalley was down injured and then several minutes later Preston forced to kick the ball out because a Wednesday player had cramp.

Preston could not convert their one man advantage. They did find the net but it was ruled out for an apparent push by Chilvers in the area. Preston probably just shaded the match but will have to show more if they are to progress. On the positive St Ledger and Chilvers fitted in well at the back.
