The second half was a dreary affair with neither side looking to attack and get a winning goal.

Scunthorpe took an early 1-0 lead after nine minutes when a left-wing cross by Andrew Dawson was met by a Martin Carruthers right-foot shot from ten yards that was well saved by Preston goalkeeper David Lucas. But the rebound was netted by Steve Torpey from ten yards out.

Preston equalised with a penalty in the 23rd minute when Nathan Stanton was adjudged to have fouled Richard Cresswell on the left of the penalty box. Alexander hit a low right foot penalty into the bottom right hand corner of the net.

Preston substituted David Healy for Ricardo Fuller on 59 minutes and in the 68th minute Wayne Graves was booked for a foul on Paul McKenna.

Matthew Sparrow was booked in the 78th minute for a foul on Eddie Lewis as he pulled his shirt.

Scunthorpe made a substitution in the 86th minute when they replaced Alex Calvo-Garcia with Terry Barwick and Preston substituted USA star Eddie Lewis for Lee Cartwright a minute later.

Nathan Stanton was booked for hand ball in the 88th minute and Matthew Sparrow was replaced by Andy Parton in the 96th before the game went to extra time.

Preston's winning goal came just five minutes from the end of extra time from Jamaican International Ricardo Fuller, who latched on to a Lee Cartwright through ball before firing an unstoppable shot into the roof of the net which gave Scunthorpe goalkeeper Tom Evans no chance.
