Preston have to win all their remaining games if they are to stand any chance of making the top six and today they boosted their goal difference to give them a fighting chance should others start to drop points.

Preston started the match off well despite the referee insistent on giving the visititors most contentious decisions. Preston took the lead early on thanks to a Mellor shot that was deflected and spun past the helpless Cardiff keeper.

The lead was doubled when Cardiff failed to clear their lines. Mckenna who was playing game number 472 for Pretson and equalling Finney's number of appearances for the club, took a pot shot from twenty five yards. This shot deflected off Mellor and into the back of the net.

Cardiff were then given a lifeline on the stroke of half time when Mawene was adjudged to have fouled inside the box. The game could have changed for Cardiff but Lonergan got a good fist to Mccormack's spot kick and the half time whistle blew.

Cardiff brought on Chopra but were soon deflated as Parkin was put clean through. His slid home to make the game safe. Preston continued to press forward with a chinking run from Sedgewick. His cross was converted by Kennedy who headed into his own net via te post.

Brown came on up front and converted from a Sedgewick cross whilst Williamson slid home athrough ball to make it six. Brown missed a sitter to make it seven but the home fans went home happy.

Preston sit a point behind sixth place Burnley who have played a game less. Preston's goal difference ha sbeen boosted but Swansea still sit above them in seventh with Burnley playing Sheffield United on Monday evening.
