Player Profile TOMMY BOOTH

Tommy Anthony Booth was born in Manchester on 9 November 1949 and came through the junior ranks at Manchester City. Booth signed professional forms in August 1967 and started a career with City which spanned 14 years.

Booth made his debut in October 1968 in a 1-1 draw at Maine Road against Arsenal. During his first season for City Booth made 28 league appearances, scoring one goal. Booth also made 7 FA Cup appearances during the 1968/69 season scoring one goal, which was the winning goal against Everton at Villa Park in the Semi Final. A Neil Young winner in the final gave Booth his only FA Cup winners medal.

Joe Mercer described him as the perfect centre-half and as being like Stan Cullis and Neil Franklin rolled into one. The 1969/70 saw Booth miss only one league game and win a further two trophies, the first was a League Cup winners medal against West Brom in March 1970, the second was a European Cup-Winners medal after City beat Gornik Zabrze 2-1.

Booth became the first choice centre-half for seven seasons and appeared in 4 England under 23 matches but he never played in a full international for England . City did reach the League Cup Final again in 1974 but was lost to Wolves 2-1.

The arrival of Dave Watson in 1975 and an injury to Colin Bell allowed Booth to move into midfield as the 1975/76 season saw Booth score 6 goals in 26 appearances and a second League Cup Winners medal as City beat Newcastle 2-1. The following season saw City finish runners-up in the League to Liverpool by one point.

Together with Joe Corrigan, Booth was the only other member of the famous side of the 70's which survived Malcolm Allison's big clearout in 1979.

In 1980/81 Booth scored the only goal against Peterborough in the fifth round of the FA Cup. Sadly he was not in the line-up in the Final as City was defeated by Tottenham.

Under John Bond it became clear that Booth was nearing the end of his City career and his only league and therefore last appearance for City was on 19 September 1981 as City lost 3-0 at Birmingham.

The following month Booth signed for Preston under Tommy Docherty for £30,000 with another City player in Gary Buckley joining him at PNE a few weeks later. Booth's career at City had spanned 484 appearances, which included 382 league appearances, scoring 25 goals; 27 FA Cup appearances, scoring 5 goals; 46 League Cup appearances scoring 3 goals and a further 26 European and 3 Charity Shield appearances.

Booth made his debut for PNE on 6 October 1981 in the League Cup Second Round First Leg against Leicester #. His league debut was four days later in a 0-0 draw at Bristol City. Booth made a total of 27 league appearances during the Preston's centenary season.

Injuries hampered the 1982/83 season for Booth, making his first appearance of the season on January 8 1983 in a 3-0 defeat against Leeds in the FA Cup Third Round. Booth made a total of 15 appearances including a goal in the 1-1 draw at Plymouth in April 1983.

Booth scored his second goal for Preston in March 1984 in a 2-2 draw at Wimbledon as he made 31 appearances during the 1983/84 season.

Booth made his final 11 appearances as a player for Preston in 1984/85 the last of these was a 3-0 defeat at Millwall on 10 November 1984.

No wins in December and January and a defeat at home to non-league Telford in the FA Cup led to Alan Kelly resigning as manager in February 1985.

Tommy Booth became Preston's 14 post war manager as he initially took over on a temporary capacity. Preston continued to struggle and although he got his first victory against Cambridge on 26 February only 2,653 watched the match.

Booth was given the job full time on 26 April 1985 with Brian Kidd coming in as his assistant. But it was too late to stop PNE getting relegated to the fourth tier of football for the first time in their history after conceding 100 goals for the season.

The start of 1985/86 saw John Thomas make his Preston debut but the team had mixed results. PNE lost the first game of the season 4-2 at home to Peterborough, but beat Blackpool in the both legs of the League Cup tie.

After beating Torquay at home 4-0 in September an appalling performance three days later saw PNE thrashed 6-0 by Northampton.

Things went from bad to worse as PNE had their floodlights condemned in October causing their lowest ever Deepdale crowd of 2,007 against
Scunthorpe
in the afternoon of November 5 and concede seven at Walsall in the FA Cup. No victories in December put PNE third from bottom in Division Four.

On 24 January 1986, Booth resigned as manager to be replaced by his assistant Brian Kidd. As manager Booth had won 11 out of 42 matches.

Booth left football and became a Satellite and TV installation technician for Granada in the 1990's.

Later Booth became involved on match days with Corporate Hospitality at the City of Manchester Stadium.
