His first season Emerson made 23 league appearances for County, scoring 1 goal. For the next three seasons Emerson only missed 5 league games and was named Stockport player of the year at the end of the 1984/85 season.

Emerson made 156 league appearances, scoring 7 league goals when Stockport accepted an offer of £30,000 by Third Division Rotherham in July 1985. He only missed one match during the 1985/86 season and had his most profitable season of his career scoring 7 league goals.

Emerson played in every game for Rotherham until his departure during 1986/87. After playing a starring role in a Littlewoods Cup tie Emerson joined First Division Coventry in an exchange deal worth £100,000 in October 1986. Emerson had scored 8 goals from 55 league matches for Rotherham.

Emerson made his debut for the Sky Blues on 19 October 1986 in a 1-0 win at home to Wimbledon . During the season Emerson made a further 18 league appearances.

During the 1987/88 season Emerson suffered a serious knee injury from a challenge by Gary Megson which led to three operations and to miss the FA Cup final victory against Tottenham 3-2.

Emerson played for Coventry for a further four seasons making 18 appearances in 1988/89; 12 appearances in 1989/90; 24 appearances in 1990/91 and 21 appearances in the 1991/92 season.

Emerson joined Second Division Hartlepool and made a good start with his new club as they were in second position and was in a play off position in the New Year. They also beat Crystal Palace 1-0 and defeated a club from the top division for the first time in their history. But after a run of bad results and not scoring for 1227 minutes Hartlepool finished 16 in the 1992/93 season.

Emerson returned to Stockport for the second time in November 1993 after 45 appearances and 1 goal for Hartlepool . Emerson stayed for a year making 11 further appearances for Stockport.

In November 1994 Emerson joined Preston and made his debut on 19 November as a substitute for Ian Bryson in a 2-0 home win against Northampton . Emerson also came on as a substitute in the two FA Cup Second Round ties against Walsall , which after a 1-1 draw at Deepdale Walsall won the replay 4-0. His only start for PNE was on 17 December in a 1-0 win against Barnet.

Emerson was released and joined non-league Chorley . Following his departure from professional football, Emerson became a postman.
