Preston should have had this match sewn up by half time. Parkin had a goal disallowed for offised before a left footed Billy Jones shot saw the ex-Crewe man bag his second in two games for the whites.

Shortly after Eliott doubled the total in what was an unchanged starting eleven for the Whites. Preston went close on numerous other occassions through Wallace and Parkin who missed an open goal from ten yards out.

The game then turned in the second period when Preston, not for the first time this season failed to pick up their markers from a set piece as Southampton pulled a goal back from a free header at a corner.

The visitors were soon level when St Ledger failed to clear a cross, heading directly into the path of the visitng forward line who could not miss from six yards out. Prestont he changed the front two with Mellor and Brown coming on.

The killer blow came on ninety minutes when the Saints were allowed to waltz all the way througt ht eNorth End team without so much as a tackle going in before slotting past Lonergan.

Preston now travel away and appear to be in trouble as they have not picked up three points on the road since the opening weekend of the season.
