Preston fielded a full strength side in preperation for the big kick off next Saturday whilst Sir Alex Ferguson played a team mostly full of youngsters with Solskjaer and Rossi up front with Kieran Richardon playing in midfield.

Preston took the lead in the first ten minutes when the ball landed at the left foot of ex-United youngster Danny Pugh inside the box. Pugh blasted home to give North End an early lead.

Preston held the lead well with United threatening in spells. The lead was doubled in the seond half when Pugh was set free on the left in a three on one situation. Instead of shooting he slided the ball to Whaley who slotted past the keeper.

Substitutuions slowed the game down and Youl Mawene suffered what looked like to be a serious injury when he and Stock went for the same ball. Mawene was stretchered off with his leg taped up and the injury looked serious.

Several minutes later Chilvers lost the ball and United went into the box where Mccormack appeared to win the ball although the referee decided otherwise and pointed to the spot. Solskjaer sloted home the penalty and in added time hit the bar but Preston held on for the victory.
