Preston Sunk By Shrimps

Morecambe started the match in fine style with a goal to grace any match. Preston could do little but watch as Jim Bentley volleyed in from a superb cross to make a magnificent finish putting Morecambe ahead in the first ten minutes.

Preston put out the same side as Saturday except for Hill and Jones playing at full backs instead of Alexander and Davidson.

Morecambe played a 4-5-1 formation which suited them as they soaked up all the Preston pressure. After the break Preston were dominant without finding a way through the Morecambe line. Eventually substitute Hawley crossed for Pugh to head home at the far post.

Preston piled on the pressure for the winner in normal time with Morecambe playing on the break and having a goal disallowed before an error from Wayne Henderson. A ball ploughed into the box had keeper written all over it. Under no pressure Henderson caught the ball and on falling proceeded to drop it at the feet of Artell six yards out with a clear goal to aim at. North End had no time to respond and find themselves out of the Cup once again at the first attempt.

Simpson now must regain some composure after saying earlier in the day this was a competition he was taking seriously.
